M5 distance sensor

A testing system for vibration analysis in the car industry. The system integrates 12 M5 sensors for data recording and logging.
Tested was the deflection of the wheel suspension and the effects of the steering angles.
The system is measuring and logging the real-time movements of all 4 wheels during the testing process.

ESP Tests (Electronic Stability Program)

By well directed braking actions, ESP is making sure to correct driving faults causing understeer or oversteer.
Specifically every single wheel can be slowed down and, if necessary, the engine power is adapted automatically. The braking actions are happening as fast as lightning and they are lasting only fractions of seconds. The "brain", steering those interventions, is the main computer.
Therefore, the Audi R&D Team had developed software, called "Dynamic Stabilization Systems". This program is permanently checking the actual performance of the car against the given values.
To verify and quantify the different software versions and updates, they mounted 7 M5 sensors to a car, to conduct different tests.
Afterwards, on the basis of the logged data, a reliable system adjustment could be made.
"Without the fast and reliable M5 sensors, the results of this test would haven been conjectural", was the comment of the R&D team leader.

The M5 sensor is the predecessor of the now available M7 distance sensor. With an increased sampling frequency of 54 kHz measurings of fast moving objects can be made.
A sensor, working on average technique, may be accurate, but not fast.
Vibration and oscillation measurement is demanding for fast, reliable, accurate and contactless measuring tools.

We have a large assortment of fast and accurate laser sensors, useable for the most diverse applications.
