Verify railroad tracks
with sensors M5, M25 and scanner M2D at a speed of 120 km/h (74.5 miles/h)

Rail fastening system
In Japan and Korea earthquakes frequently occur, therefore the mounting screws has to be surveyed to avoid dangerous situations and to care for the security of the passengers.
  •  control of rail fastening system
•  registration of stud-bolts
•  output of alarm signals
•  contiuous recording of signals
•  control of rail profile
•  detection of degree of abrasion

Three M5 sensors are controlling the Korean rail system. The reference signal for the fastening of the screws is displayed by Sensor no. 2.
The inspection train moves at a speed of 80 km/h (49.7 miles/h.). On the way, the fastening screws are surveyed. If a loose screw is detected, the location of the defect screw is stored in a protocol. Afterwards the repair team is able to fix / replace the screws quickly, in that they know exactly the position of the fault.

With the
successor M7 this measurement would be possible at a speed of 100 km/h (62.14 miles/h.).

The track Tokyo - Nagasaki is controlled every morning by a special measuring train, equipped with sensor technology. By using M25 distance sensors, the inspection train is able to run at a speed of 120 km/h (74.5 miles/h.) This speed is necessary, to verifiy the whole track length, before Shikansen starts to operate.

This measurement would be even faster with the
successor M27. The inspection train could move at a speed of 150 km/h (93.2 miles/h.)

Rail profile and gage of the track
Synchronistical to the screw inspection, the rail profile and the gage of the track can be checked by M2D scanners. Analysis, storage and real-time recall are supporting the effective work scheduling of the maintenance team. Abrasion, cracks and dimensional variations are detected at an early stage - long before ending in disaster.
The M2D scanner is recording the rail profile with up to 50 scans per second. In doing so, the rails are visualized via laptop for exact monitoring.
The
M2D-Vision-Demo-Software enables the automatically compensation of vacillation, caused by movement of object to be measured during the traction operation. Several sensors may be synchronized. Tapering and gage of trace can be collected and calculated online.

On simultaneous storage of GPS data, all profiles can be analyzed, evaluated and documented unhurriedly after the inspection tour. The track is staying open for business as usual. At the same time, the GPS data are giving information about the exact failure location.
